The Prechange Way
The Prechange Check

Know before you launch

Run the Prechange Check. Get your Prechange Index.

A short, anonymous survey of the four conditions: energy, headroom, perspective and habits. It shows, team by team, where people stand before a change, and again after it.

1How it works

Four steps

  1. Choose the teamsPick the teams or departments facing the change.
  2. People answer on a phone24 short statements, 6 for each condition. About 6–8 minutes. Anonymous.
  3. Answers become the IndexEach team gets a Prechange Index from 0 to 100, a score for each condition, and the condition that is lowest.
  4. Leaders read it togetherA 90-minute debrief to decide where to start, what to prepare, and when to launch.
2Reading the Index

What the scores mean

Four bands help leaders talk about the results. They are working assumptions, not fixed cut-offs.

  • 0–39Not ready. Launching a change here first carries real risk.
  • 40–59Prepare first. Build the weaker conditions before launch.
  • 60–79Workable. The change can go ahead, with support where scores dip.
  • 80–100Ready. A good place to start.
3A sample heat map

What leaders see

In this sample, Operations is not ready: energy and headroom are low. Launching a new system there first would be risky. Human resources is the stronger place to start.

Anonymous by design

  • No names are collected. People give only their team and role level.
  • Results are shown for a team only when 5 or more people answer.
  • Everyone is asked for consent before they start.
  • Designed to align with PIPEDA, Canada’s private-sector privacy law.
  • The results belong to your organization.
5What it is, and is not

Not yet a validated scale

Illustration from the book: two bars, before and after, each labelled same measure: an outside measure, one you did not design. Measure the same things, the same way, twice.

Not yet a validated scale. We use it consistently, before and after, to see whether conditions moved.

Use the result as a starting point for conversation, not a verdict.

It measures the conditions around people, not the ability of any one person. It does not rank or score individuals.

The Check is measurement. A pilot shows whether building the conditions changes the result.
